Two of SA’s award winning authors share their experience about writing books

Friday Stand In Richard Calland interviewed two South African authors, who both have written award winning books, about their experience of writing books.

Marianne Thamm is the Assistant Editor of Daily Maverick and author of "I Have Life - Alison’s Story".

Ron Irwin is a writer and lecturer at UCT whose book “Flat Water Tuesday” has been selected to be turned into a Hollywood feature film.

Thamm has just finished writing a book “Hitler, Verwoerd, Nelson Mandela and Myself” which is coming out in September. She described the experience of writing her latest book as “weird”.

It’s a very rare, beautiful and agonising pleasure to have a space in which to be quiet and write something, scratch at the wall of pavilion

Marianne Thamm, Associate Editor of The Daily Maverick

Listen the full conversation below:

I get up in the morning, take the kids to school. I work solidly from 8am right through until 5pm and sometimes do my Daily Maverick work on top of it. So I am very disciplined.

Marianne Thamm, Associate Editor of The Daily Maverick

Speaking to Richard Calland, Ron Irwin described his writing experience as being similar to driving in the night. He says he fell in love with the characters in his novel and that kept him going.

I thought of the characters, and I thought of the situation that they want to get out of.

Ron Irwin, writer and lecturer at UCT

I do a lot of work in front of a computer and I do a lot of work in the kitchen in front of the sink, because if you do something like washing the dishes, you suddenly have that moment of oh! that’s how I am going to solve the problem…

Ron Irwin, writer and lecturer at UCT

You sit in traffic and your mind wonders and you start thinking about the book and suddenly the ideas you need come to you
