Spotlight on Rape: Focus on concrete ways people can help

This week, CapeTalk will be focusing the spotlight on rape following the recent surge of attacks and violence against women and children.

CapeTalk's John Maytham spoke to Lisa Vetten, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research to find out the important elements to be highlighted when talking about rape.

According to Vetten, we need to focus on what could be done beyond just talking about rape and concrete actions that people can take to change the situation.

I think one thing that is on top of the list is the services currently provided to survivors of rape and domestic violence.

Lisa Vetten, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research

We need to draw lessons to see what is it that is not happening in other parts of the country that this experience is an exception rather than a rule.

Vetten says people could look at ways in which they could support local rape crisis centres. She spoke specifically of how corporate companies need to provide support where it is needed.
