How a single township internet café grew into a nationwide IT franchise business

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Luvuyo Rani, Founder and Managing Director of Silulo Ulutho Technologies, for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Rani is the Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2016).

Rani’s Cape Town based company operates IT stores and training centres in townships and rural areas throughout South Africa, providing job opportunities for unemployed youth.

Silulo Ulutho Technologies started out in 2004 as an internet café in Khayelitsha, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town.

It has since grown into an IT franchise business with 36 branches.

Silulo Ulutho Technologies offers computer and phone sales and repairs, web development, CV creation, printing, scanning, faxing, binding, lamination, typing of letters, computer training and design of custom obituaries.

There is money in townships. Even if Khayelitsha has 50% unemployment; there is a large population.
