Lionel Smit is a Cape Town artist doing South Africa proud with his internationally recognised artwork.
Smit will leave for the United States, in mid June, for the installation of his bronze sculpture Morphous – in New York’s Union Square.
Morphous will be on display for at least 10 months, for all to see in the Big Apple.
Smit explains that the sculpture depicts a layered, mirrored image of a Cape Malay woman, used to represent the diverse identities that make up South Africa's fabric.
He says the sculpture holds multiple meanings, to portray the cultural hybridity and psycho-social state of the country.
One of the faces looks into the future, and the one looks into the past.— Lionel Smit, Cape Town artist
