How to put children first when going through a divorce or separation

Not every marriage lasts "till death do us part". When a marriage ends in divorce and there are children involved, how do both parents put their differences aside and focus on the best interests of their children.

Parenting Expert Nikki Bush looks at ways to help parents to keep their children's needs first when going through a divorce or separation.

She says parents need to find a child friendly way to look at divorce and choose an option that will have positive results for everybody involved.

As parents we need to be cognisant of the fact that our children are watching everything. They see everything, and they internalise everything that goes on around them

The ultimate goal is that we all want to keep the warm-loving relationship we all have with our children where possible.

In a divorce, Bush says parents should look at the most positive outcome that moves away from the naming, shaming and blaming and look at whats best for the children.

Bush was later joined by divorce attorney, Roger Newton-Knowles, who spoke about collaborative divorce. This is a litigation alternative available for divorcing parents which is starting to gain a foothold in the family law arena in South Africa.
