Busiswa Sobahle, who hails from Gugulethu, defied the odds when she got an opportunity to study at Stellenbosch University.
She was admitted into the Extended Degree Programme. The programme is designed to help students who do not meet all the criterion for a particular degree by adding an extra year of study.
She says she was faced with a lot of prejudice for being on the extended programme. But she says she remained focused and ignored all the negative remarks made about her.
It was as if you are not meant to be at university or you not good enough to be at university. But I kept myself grounded because I knew why I was there regardless of all the voices around me.— Busiswa Sobahle, International Leadership Development Programme recipient
She is currently completing the final year of her BA degree in International Studies and will soon be jetting off to the US to participate in a prestigious international leadership development programme.
Speaking to Pippa Hudson, Sobahle says applying for this programme required her to have a lot of courage and she is delighted to be part of it.
She explained what the programme aims to achieve and how this would be a new beginning to success.
