Temperatures drop bringing rain and possible snow

Cold, rain and snow in some parts of the country are expected in the coming days.

A strong cold front arrived in the Western Cape this morning bringing rain to the Cape Town and surrounds. The cold wet and windy weather are expected to shift eastwards through the next few days, bringing snow to the mountains of the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal by Friday evening and Saturday morning.

According to Simon, while dry conditions will return with temperatures gradually recovering after the weekend, a second front is forecast to bring further showers to the Cape on Monday evening with further showers also expected next Wednesday.

In Gauteng, a mild day is expected ahead of the front Friday but the Highveld should see temperatures begin to dip later on Saturday afternoon, becoming very cold on Sunday with the mercury hovering at or below ten degrees. This will have the effect of resetting Gauteng temperatures lower for the rest of the week, with maximums expected in the mid- to high teens and minimums dropping below zero in places.

For some this cold front will be a welcome departure from uncharacteristically hot conditions. According to Weather Watch SA, a number of temperature records were broken in the past week in the Western Cape.

These follow what had already been a dry start to the Western Cape’s winter rainfall season, following on from an extremely long, hot summer, so despite the warnings of wintry weather, the addition of more rainfall will be welcomed by farmers and municipalities alike.
