Political leaders cross swords at The Gathering

The Daily Maverick's The Gathering is underway, with political leaders doing battle in a number of fierce debates.

This year's event is focusing on the upcoming local elections. EWN's Gia Nicolaides reports from the event in Midrand.

She said the event was well supported and the Dome in Midrand had been filled to capacity since early this morning.

The ANC's Treasurer-General Zweli Mkhize, DA's leader Mmusi Maimane and EFF leader Julius Malema had all taken the podium in this morning's debate.

Mkhize said "we need to focus on our resilient institutions and resilient economy and he feels we can bounce back", says Nicolaides.

Similar sentiments were expressed by DA leader Maimane who said he is more positive about South Africa's future than he has ever been. His main focus was on corruption and the need to change leadership in the municipalities.

Julius Malema spoke boldly about crushing white supremacy.

He said the EFF will not defend or fight for white people because white people should not remain in a privileged situation. He also said if the EFF needs to, it will fight state violence with violence the same way as the ANC did during apartheid.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Nicolaides says the conveners on stage were certainly asking the politicians the difficult questions.

There will be other politicians speaking later in the day, as well as mayoral candidates and economics experts.
