Despite the pay dispute, the 300 striking South African firefighters were earning more in Canada than what they currently earn in the country, says Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa.
She explains that the issue of equity was raised by their Canadian colleagues while battling a raging wildland fire in Alberta.
Even though firefighters earned more in Canada, their income was still less than their Canadian counterparts, Molewa explains.
She says that, although their grievances were not raised correctly, mediation is still required to resolve the pay dispute.
Molewa reminds South Africans not to forget about the contribution made by the firefighters.
When we talk to them, and about them, we should not forget all the good that they do.— Edna Molewa, Minister of Environmental Affairs
