Questions still linger around 1976 Soweto Uprisings' Mbuyisa Makhubu

What do we know about the young man in the iconic picture of the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising, who is seen carrying Hector Pieterson?

'Through the cracks - the untold story of Mbuyisa Makhubu', is a 4-part podcast series compiled by EWN reporter, Mandy Weiner, who endeavoured to find his whereabouts.

702/Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi spoke to her about the inspiration behind pursuing the story and what she has discovered from her year of investigations.

Listen to the conversation below:

We felt it important for the legacy of Mbuyisa Makhubu and the generation of 1976 to tell a story like this in this way.

Mandy Weiner, EWN reporter

Weiner has been working on the story for more than a year in an effort to tell Makhubu's story in the most authentic way possible.

The overwhelming sense that I got from everyone I spoke to about this, is that people just don't know. They've learnt to live with not knowing.

Mandy Weiner, EWN reporter
