How to deal with being bullied as an adult

Dr Schomer kicked things off by offering a description of bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.

Unfortunately bullying does not only exist among young people. Adults can be bullies too.

What happens when you are bullied as an adult? Dr Schomer says when adults are bullied they don't perform well in their duties.

There's a lot of denial and rationalisation in the workplace about bullying, says Schomer. People accept bullying as a normal business practice.

He says management often tells bullied adults that they are "sensitive" and need to toughen up.

Does tough mean that I belittle you, that I diminish you and threaten you? Not at all. Tough means you are letting people be, you treat them as equals and as adults with their own opinions.

Tumi called in to the show and recounted her emotional story about being bullied repeatedly in the workplace by a colleague. She said when she reported it, management had told her to stop being so sensitive. Eventually she felt she had no choice but to resign.

Dr Schomer carried over the subject of bullying into the following week, taking calls from listeners who battled with being bullied in the workplace to a point some of them quit their jobs.

Cindy, caller in Midrand could not handle being bullied any longer and decided to quit a job she loved. She says the bullying led to her being institutionalised in a mental institution for almost two years. She missed out on a lot of work which her boss eventually said she was incompetent.
