Young girls inspiration sparked by space technology workshop

15 June 2016 12:06 PM

150 girls to attend workshop as part of the MEDO SPACE programme on Youth Day and inspire a next generation of space programmers

MED, the Meta Development Economic Organisation, is hosting a new space programme that focuses on young women from 6 under-serviced schools in Cape Town.

Pippa Hudson spoke to MEDO Space Programme Manager, Carla de Klerk to hear more about the event.

The girls will participate in a day long workshop and build intelligent rovers, like the Mars rover. They will learn to programme the rover as well.

We want to inspire young girls to take up STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Carla de Klerk, MEDO Space Programme Manager

Currently in South Africa, less than 14% of all STEM careers are held by women.

We want to up that stat by generating a generation of incredibly passionate and inspirational young women,

Carla de Klerk, MEDO Space Programme Manager
