The rise in the use of cough syrup as a drug in focus

Lorraine Osman, from Pharmaceutical South Africa, says it’s easy to become addicted to cough syrup because of codeine.

It's understood the use of the concoction referred to as 'sizzurp', 'purple drank', 'lean' is on the rise in schools.

Osman says one of the side-effects of the cough syrup is falling into a coma.

Codeine-based prescription cough syrup is mixed with cool drinks and often sweets, resulting in a high.

Asked what the side-effects are, Osman it’s very addictive.

Your breathing can be affected, you can go into a coma and it’s very addictive. Codeine can cause life-threatening respiratory depression; it can also damage your liver.
