Most people recognise Akin Omotoso from his days playing Khaya on Generations. What they don’t realise is the actor turned filmmaker has now assumed his most powerful role yet – driving forward the South African film industry.
Omotoso says the movie-making bug bit him in drama school, and remained with him ever since. In 2015, his filmTell Me Sweet Love broke local box office records – something he could only dream of at university.
Omotoso says being in the South African film industry is a marathon, not a sprint. He’s fully aware many of his peers never made it in film, so he considers every day a success.
Despite his talents in acting and directing, Omotoso maintains his first love is storytelling. South Africans, he says, need to celebrate their own stories – and more people will listen.
