The Department of Transport launched the South African National Taxi Industry Awards on Tuesday, to encourage good service and to improve the treatment of commuters.
The awards have been initiated by taxi association SANTACO.
The department's spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says have endorsed the awards as a means of building a sustainable taxi industry.
“One of the categories of the awards is to award the best operator, meaning the best taxi owner, but what we have continuously emphasized with the operators is that there needs to be a contract between themselves and the drivers which then stipulates the environment in which they must operate. ”
He adds “When we launched the awards on this month, all associations or most associations were represented and they have made a direct commitment to make sure they improve the services that they offer to the people.”
If they do not improve the standards by ensuring that the commuters get the best out of the services that they offer, obviously commuters have got alternatives that they will use to transport themselves.— Ishmael Mnisi
We hoping that they will heed to governments call and if not they will lose the subsidies that we are giving them through the taxi recap which we have invested lots of money in.— Ishmael Mnisi
