Residents of the Barcelona informal settlement, near Gugulethu, embarked on violent protests over ANC election candidate lists on Cape Town's N2 highway on Wednesday night.
Two Golden Arrow buses were torched during demonstrations, some motorists mugged, while other stoned vehicles and barricaded the roads.
It is believed that residents are dissatisfied with their ANC ward candidate Bongani Ngcombolo.
The Western Cape ANC insists that there are no party structures who are protesting, adding that the demonstrators were individuals.
ANC spokesperson, Yonela Diko, has condemned the violence and what he calls opportunistic criminals who hijack protest action.
There's this growing trend where you've got criminals and hooligans who jump onto the band wagon of protests and start perpetuating chaos.— Yonela Diko, Western Cape ANC spokesperson
If there were enough protesters, they wouldn't need to burn things, they would just close the N2. It shows that it was a few people who tried to multiply their number by using violence.— onela Diko, Western Cape ANC spokesperson
