A cold weekend ahead

Another strong cold front is set to make landfall over the Western Cape on Thursday evening.

With it will come very cold, wet and windy weather to Cape Town, rough seas along the southern coast and the likelihood of snow in the mountains.

The rain should be set in throughout Friday, clearing as we move into the weekend. Despite the sunshine, Cape Town’s weekend weather will still be cold.

Ahead of the cold front, parts of the Karoo and the Eastern Cape are experiencing berg wind conditions: hot, dry, windy weather that could exacerbate the spread of veld fires.

All of this weather will shift eastward along the coast so that the rain will reach Durban by late Saturday or Sunday.

A strong high pressure continues to dominate the interior. This has the effect of blocking the cold front and squeezing it south along the coast, meaning that the rain will not extend up onto the Highveld.

Gauteng will remain sunny and dry but Saturday and Sunday should be substantially colder than it has been over the past few weeks, with maximum temperatures forecast to remain in the mid-teens into next week.
