Henri van Breda's sister is on the state witness list

4 July 2016 10:32 AM
A list of 114 state witnesses has been released, in the case of Henri van Breda, accused of murdering his family in Stellenbosch in January 2015.

EWN senior reporter Giovanni Gerbi talks to Pippa Hudson about the latest developments in the Henri van Brada murder case.

A list of 114 state witnesses has been released in the case of the young man accused of murdering his family with an axe, in Stellenbosch in January 2015.

All witnesses subpoenaed by the state will be expected to appear in court, reports Gerbi.

Henri van Breda's sister Marli is number 17 on the the state's witness list.

Gerbi says that Marli van Breda's curator has asked that her privacy be respected. She is currently in matric and trying to get on with her life.

The question is has her retrograde amnesia subsided, and whether she can remember anything from the night of the 27 January 2015?

Giovanna Gerbi, Senior Reporter EWN

One of Henri van Breda's bail conditions is that he has no contact with any state witnesses. Gerbi says she has reliable information that there has been little contact between brother and sister to date.

No interference with state witnesses is permitted by anyone leading up to the pre-trial hearing that is scheduled for 9 September in the Western Cape High Court.

Sports commentator Martin Locke, the van Breda's neighbour on the de Zalze gold estate in Stellenbosch, is also on the witness list.

Susan Galloway, known for her successful prosecution of Najwa Peterson for the murder of her husband, famous musician Taliep Peterson, will represent the state.

Henri van Breda is being represented by heavy hitter Pieter Botha, who defended Shrien Diwani, which saw that accussed completely exonerated for the murder of his wife Anni who was killed on their honeymoon in Cape Town in 2010.

The pre-trial hearing in September will probably just be an exchange of documents and change of venue procedure.

The trial will likely only begin next year, says Gerbi.
