Baghdad correspondent says Iraqis angry that government failed to protect them

In a spate of devastating terror attacks in the Middle East, the latest is the bombing in Baghdad, the seventh attack to take place in Iraq since February this year.

Baghdad Correspondent Mohammed Salih is on the line with Pippa Hudson.

He says it is the worst Isis attack in Baghdad to date, and the death toll continues to rise, and is currently at over 150 people killed. This, as the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close.

There are reports of whole families that were trapped inside the shopping centre where the attack took place, and it may be that whole families may have lost their lives.

Salih says it is a clear message from Isis that has struck at the heart of the Iraqi capital, that it is still capable of causing enormous destruction.

It has lost a lot of territory in both Iraq and Syria over the past year.

Mohammed Salih, Baghdad Correspondent

He says these groups are very focused and sophisticated and even with loss of territory, still have capabilities to launch these attacks.

the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi visited the site of the attack yesterday. Salih says he was rejected by the people in the area, who are very angry that the Iraqi forces have failed to protect them.

The attacks have not stopped, in fact this has been one of the most violent periods in Iraq.
