ANC retaliates after SABC board chair claims party has ulterior motives

The ANC has categorically denied having any business interest in the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The ANC’s Jackson Mthembu says it seems that the ruling party and the public broadcaster are at the point of "parting ways".

This comes after SABC board chairperson, Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, accused party members of having ulterior motives behind criticising its current leadership and editorial decisions.

Mthembu says the ANC has the public broadcaster's best interest in mind, but has been undermined by SABC management.

The ANC has no business interest in the SABC. We fought for an SABC that is a public broadcaster that carries a public mandate.

Mthembu maintains that the SABC's broadcast ban on violent protest infringes on the rights of South Africans and amounts to censorship.

We are saying to the SABC that they are wrong... They can't use the public broadcaster to show the middle finger to the people of South Africa.
