Philando Castile is the 561st person to be killed by police in the US this year.

From the 1st to the 7th July, 16 people had been shot and killed by police. The total for 2016 as of the 7th of July is 561. 95 were killed in June alone.

In 2015, police shot and killed 1 146 people. The numbers are provided in an ongoing story by The Guardian detailing each incident, the location and, if known, the race of the person.

It has found more Latino, Black, and Native American people are killed than white people, in relation to the size of the relative populations.

It suggests that US Police Departments have serious issues around their use of guns, who they are more likely to fire upon, and just how many guns are in circulation.

Public reaction after each incident does not appear to have changed how police respond, but the nature of the coverage is changing, as more of these incidents are being filmed.

Two videos have emerged of the shooting of Alton Sterling, besides the footage that was due to be captured by the officers body cameras and the dash camera in the police vehicle.

The moments after the shooting of Philando Castile were captured on Facebook by his girlfriend. The post was public and had been viewed 2.7 million times just 12 hours after it was posted. (warning: the footage shows Castile after he was shot)

Protests, tributes and significant media coverage might suggest that enough has now happened for something to change.

However there does not seem to be broad political will to address gun ownership, nor do police departments seem willing to deal with their behaviour and willingness to fire their weapons.

#BlackLivesMatter is the banner for those speaking out about the situation.
