SABC board chair says they never "tied the knot" with ANC

The SABC will find out on Thursday whether or not its controversial decision to ban footage of violent protests is valid when the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) delivers its verdict.

702's Xolani Gwala spoke to SABC board member, Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe.

The latest I have got is Icasa is still deliberating on this matter.

Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, SABC Board chairman

Maguvhe says the board is not concerned about the Icasa outcome as their decision was correct.

Xolani Gwala asked Maguvhe to comment on ANC Jackson Mthembu's earlier statement to Stephen Grootes on The Midday report. Mthembu came out strongly saying the ANC will not drop the issue, where SABC board members and management will no longer listen to the governing party.

"Divorce is the best thing that can happen at this time.", said Mthembu.

It is a pity that parties are beginning to make threats. We are standing firm on what we have said.

Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, SABC Board chairman

We are not threatened by that statement, and when did we ever tie the know? We have never been in a marriage.

Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, SABC Board chairman

Professor Maguvhe asked Xolani which policies has the SABC transgressed.

And what is his take on the airing of violent protest visuals? He does not think it is good for society to see them.

It is really not nice to show those things.

Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, SABC Board chairman

There are many things we don't go to Parliament for approval.

Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, SABC Board chairman

Maguvhe said that there are exceptions to the Constitution where it is their responsibility to decide what is good for the country or not. "Not everything is captured in the Constitution", he added.
