We often hear complaints of the rulings made by the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa - but they do serve a purpose - they ensure that advertisers don't proclaim untruths or misleading statements, and they wouldn't allow this type of advertising circa 1955:

Jonathan Cherry has been looking at a range of vintage ads and wonders what future generations will think of our ads from today.

One recalls that cigarette advertising was not only allowed a few years ago, but many had the endorsement of medical practitioners.
