ICASA says it awaits SABC's official response on editorial ruling

Acting chairperson of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), Rubben Mohlaloga, says the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has seven days to respond to the ruling to withdraw its editorial changes.

In a media briefing, SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng says the public broadcaster is prepared to take the matter of its editorial changes to the Constitutional Court if needs be, and nobody is going to tell them what to do.

Mohlaloga says Icasa's ruling that the SABC must withdraw its decision not to air footage of violent protests is binding, and can only be challenged a court of law.

Mohlaloga explains measures that can be taken against the SABC or any other broadcaster if it fails to comply.

One could be a warning. You can warn the broadcaster to say you, you have failed to comply, and give people a warning and time to comply.

It can also be a fine. You determine that, given the gravity of the compliance, this particular fine is appropriate.

Or in certain extremes, you may even consider suspending a licence.
