ANC welcomes Icasa's ruling on SABC policy, but Muthambi missing from meeting

The ANC says it welcomes the ruling by communications regulator Icasa that the SABC lift its broadcast ban on violent protests.

SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng has however refused to do so, and said that he is willing to take the matter to court.

ANC Secretary-General, Gwede Mantashe spoke out against media censorship during a press briefing at Luthuli House.

Mantashe also confirmed that Communications Minister Faith Muthambi did not arrive for Monday's scheduled meeting with the party's communications commission.

The meeting was set to discuss the latest controversial developments at the national broadcaster.

This comes after the ANC's communications committee chair Jackson Mthembu strongly criticised the SABC for its poor governance and editorial policies.

Mantashe explained that Muthambi's absence was not an act of defiance, reports EWN's Clement Manyathela.

He says that he is going to reject the idea that it was defiance on the part of Faith Muthambi.

At the same time, the Freedom of Expression Institute says it is surprised and shocked at the defiance from the SABC.

The institute's executive director, Tusi Fokane says that the national broadcaster is undermining the authority of the communications regulator.
