New legislation from the Department of Health is intended to regulate the contents of beer in South Africa.
Public health expert Leslie London says the laws may help increase consumer awareness about the spirits they drink.
According to London, any producers who make beer for sale will be regulated under the proposed laws.
He explains that many home brews can be harmful and need assurance checks from health officials.

He says that the laws are not trying to prevent traditional beer-making practices.
