Keep an open mind about Public Protector candidates - Corruption Watch

Parliament has confirmed that 14 people are now on the short list to be the next Public Protector. The list includes Judge Siraj Desai, the former deputy Public Protector Mamiki Shai, and the current deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga.

Advocacy group, Corruption Watch provided the parliamentary ad hoc committee with background on all of the original candidates. Executive Director, David Lewis, talks to Stephen Grootes about the candidates.

I think there are some surprises, some not so surprising and quite a diverse list of candidates, which is all to the good.

David Lewis, Executive Director, Corruption Watch

Lewis felt the process was somewhat rushed yesterday, but he says he is looking forward to the next round.

Corruption Watch conducted high level background checks and controversies pertaining to some candidates emerged.

These issues will no doubt come up during the interviews.

David Lewis, Executive Director, Corruption Watch

Lewis says he does not want to make any concrete predictions, but urges the public to keep an open mind.

I'm sure no one outside of the legal fraternity knew who Thuli Madonsela was before she became known as Public protector.

David Lewis, Executive Director, Corruption Watch

Lewis says a concern would be if a controversial candidate was selected. It could lead to the process being stalled, and no Public Protector in place after Madonsela's term ends.

I hope they won't go for a candidate which will incur the wrath of any sector of society.
