Today's Big 3

Which political party would you vote for based on facts?

Kate Wilkinson, senior researcher at Africa Check, says during the election period there are inaccurate statements that political parties are making across the board.

An example is a recent claim by the City of Cape Town saying 67% of their budget is spent on poor communities.

Wilkinson said the claim doesn’t check out with the data that the city provided them with.

They provided a breakdown in the form of a spreadsheet which showed this final 67% but it doesn’t refer to the City of Cape Town’s budget as a whole.

Kate Wilkinson, senior researcher at Africa Check.

The African National Congress (ANC) has said that between 2001 and 2014, the percentage of households with access to piped water increased from 61.3% in 2001 to 90% in 2014.

However, Africa Check revealed that the 61.3% in the ANC manifesto seems to indicate only the share of households with piped water in their dwellings (32.3%) and in their yards (29%), as found by South Africa’s 2001 Census, but, the figure of 90% in 2014 includes communal taps and neighbours’ taps, Stats SA’s General Household Survey shows.

The EFF People’s Municipality will pass by-laws which will expropriate and allocate land equitably to all residents of the municipality for residential, recreational, industrial, religious, and agricultural purposes and activities with the principle of use it or lose it.

Wilkinson said the South African Constitution requires that this compensation be based on a number of factors, including the current use of the property and its market value.
