Law society calls on SABC to comply with Icasa order

The Law Society of South Africa has called on the SABC to comply with the ruling by communications regulator ICASA.

The ICASA ruling stated that the public broadcaster must rescind its editorial policy change to no longer broadcast images of violent and destructive protests.

Stephen Grootes speaks to Jan van Rensburg of the Law Society of South Africa about why the organisation has decided to take this stand.

We are a young democracy and we rely on the institutions to follow the law. The rule of law is one of our core principles and we want to see that there is compliance with it.

Jan van Rensburg, Law Society of South Africa

It will be a very sad day if the SABC ignores the order.

Jan van Rensburg, Law Society of South Africa

He says their concern is that government and institutions state that rule of law is complied with, but in practice there are excuses and technicalities which mitigate against this, and it is sending out the wrong message to the public.
