Public Protector's office clarifies hostage situation

Oupa Segalwe, Senior Communications Manager at the Public Protector’s office, says Thuli Madonsela has no powers to investigate issues that pre-date the establishment of her office.

The Public Protector’s office described how members of the Black First Land First movement (BLF) allegedly stormed its offices in Pretoria, armed with containers of petrol and took three staff members hostage.

Police arrested 25 of the movements’ members including its national convener Andile Mngxitama.

Mngxitama says the group was demanding that Madonsela investigate the theft of R26 billion from the Reserve Bank during the apartheid-era.

Segalwe urged people to remember that the Public Protector’s office was established in 1995.

The Public Protector was not able to move swiftly on the issue because of the complexity of the issue because it has to do with so called apartheid crimes.
