How to handle conflict among family members

Sibling rivalry is one of the most common problems leading to family feuds, says Dr Schomer. Unfortunately, conflicts between members of the family have an effect on the entire unit.

We think because we are of the same genetic heritage, because we are in love when we meet and we create a family and we think its going to stay like that, well its not.

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

Dr Schomer spoke about some of the falsely held beliefs that occur in families that contribute to these feuds. When families believe:

  • Everyone loves each other
  • Everyone listens to each other
  • Your child doesn't need discipline
  • Everyone thrives and grows in a family

He says communication is fundamental cornerstone at any gathering. This holds true in the home environment too.Family members need to communicate with one another and solve problems.

According to Dr Schomer, when parents fight in a home they create anxiety and uneasiness among their children. He says children lose that sense of belonging and security.

He also spoke about parental alienation, where the child is kept away from one parent and has no say in the matter. This is mostly done when parents are fighting and using the child as a pawn in their emotional battles. Dr Schomer says a child needs both parents.

Do not use the children as the battle ground.
