Zero chance that 'sulking' Mbeki would go on ANC campaign trail, says analyst

It is highly unlikely that former President Thabo Mbeki would agree to campaign for the ANC in the last two weeks leading to the municipal elections, says political analyst Sipho Seepe.

This comes after reports that Gauteng ANC leader Paul Mashatile encouraged Mbeki to join the ANC campaign to help the party garner votes.

According to Seepe, Mbeki has been highly critical of the ruling party in recent years, making him less likely to pledge public support.

I don't think that he's going to do that. The mere fact that the question has to be raised is, in itself, problematic.

Prof Sipho Seepe, political analyst

He says that Mbeki may still feel humiliated, and hold a grudge, after he was recalled in 2008.

Seepe suggests that Mbeki has challenged the notion of being a loyal cadre of the movement.

He says Mbeki has criticised the current leadership and administration, slamming individuals within the ruling party.

Seepe also adds that the ANC's proposition to Mbeki is a sign of desperation.
