Court approves temporary interdict on SABC's controversial broadcast ban

A Pretoria High Court judge has interdicted the SABC's broadcast ban on destructive protests, pending the outcome of a review application to test the lawfulness of the controversial policy.

This comes after the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) filed an urgent application to stop the broadcaster from imposing its editorial policy.

The foundation argued that the policy amounts to censorship for the purposes of starving South Africans of critical information pertaining to government conduct.

EWN's Barry Bateman explains that the SABC's counsel conceded on all the points made by the foundation.

Communications regulator Icasa had already ordered the SABC to withdraw policy, but SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng refused to do so, and said that he would take the matter to court.

The SABC will now have to lift the broadcast ban until the broadcaster finds legal grounds on which to review the matter.

Listen to the full conversation from The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

HSF Director, Francis Antonie says the foundation is delighted with the outcome of the court case.

I think their counsel realised that there was no way they would win this matter.

He says that the HSF and other civic organisations will monitor whether the SABC will follows the interdict.

If not, the groups will file for a contempt of order.
