State to appeal Oscar's 6 year sentence

The National prosecuting Authority has announced it's decision to apply for leave to appeal Oscar Pistorius's 6 year sentence.

The grounds of the appeal are not yet known.

The former paralympian was sentenced by Judge Masipa, in the High court earlier this month, after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013.

The state says a 6 year prison sentence imposed on Oscar Pistorius is disproportionate to the crime of murder, and describes it as shockingly lenient.

They say it has the potential to bring the administration of justice into disrepute and hopes the appeal will clarify principles around sentencing, especially in terms of crimes with prescribed minimum sentences.
