ANC ward candidate pulls out of elections over suspected death threats

ANC Philippi ward councillor Mzuzile Mpondwana has withdrawn from contesting the municipal elections over fears for his life.

The former candidate, who has had two attempts on his life, will be replaced by new ward candidate Mboniswa Nelson Chitha.

One of the incidents involved an arson attack at his office, which police are still investigating, while his home was also set alight late last year.

He says the decision was not an easy one to make, after being nominated as the preferred candidate by branch officials, to stand for Ward 35.

It was difficult for me, but at the same time my family is very important to me.

He says that a public meeting has been held where the majority of the community welcomed Chitha as the new ward candidate.

Mpondwana explains that all but one voting district (Thabo Mbeki informal settlement) are satisfied with the decision.

He adds that provincial leadership will continue to engage with the disgruntled residents, and he is willing to explain the circumstances for his withdrawal.
