HPCSA to recommend new working shifts for junior doctors

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) will soon implement newly proposed working hours for junior doctors and medical interns.

The National Department of Health's Dr Terrence Carter explains that doctors who work overnight will not be expected to continue working the following day.

Carter says that the HPSCA will announce the official hours after recommendations have been made by a task team.

We have looked at all the aspects of long and unsafe working hours.

The working conditions of junior and trainee doctors have come under the spotlight following the death of a young medical intern in a car crash, which was allegedly linked to fatigue.

The department has met with the SA medical association to establish a task team to investigate the long working hours, Carter adds.

The task team will make recommendations on how to improve the working conditions for trainee doctors.

In addition, the department plans to crack down on all facilities and hospital managers to provide sleeping accommodation for doctors to rest during their shifts.
