'Residents support decision to re-open Vuwani schools on August 4' - DBE

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says that community members in Limpopo have given the go ahead for schooling to resume next week.

The agreement in Vuwani comes after more than 20 schools were either burnt or vandalised in May, during protests over municipal demarcation.

The community is supporting us in opening schools on the 4th of August... We have the commitment and support of the community.

Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson for the Basic Education department

Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says DBE officials are preparing a catch-up curriculum plan ahead of the reopening.

He explains that DBE plans to implement a strategy to increase teaching days and hours to ensure that learners are back on track.

Mhlanga says that residents have volunteered to help prepare and clean the schools.

He says the co-operation is an indication that education services will be restored in the area.
