Clifton in Cape Town is the 2nd best beach in the world – National Geographic

Clifton is the second best beach on the planet, claimed National Geographic in an article this past week.

The magazine describes the Mother City as “The African Capital of Cool”, set along a peninsula that divides the frigid Atlantic Ocean from the balmier Indian Ocean. It also mentions that Cape Town has 20 gorgeous beaches within striking distance of the CBD.

“I just came from Clifton and it’s absolutely perfect down there today!” said KFM Surf Forecaster Deon Bing on Thursday. “It’s about 35 degrees without a hint of wind and hardly any swell. The beach is clean, facilities are excellent and the lifeguards are watching. I’d say it’s most definitely one of the world’s best beaches.”

Beautiful beach with some fine looking people

Clifton’s beach – as many others in Cape Town – is packed with beautiful people. The vibe is phenomenal and infectious, but it does get extremely busy.

Public transport to Clifton is cheap and easy to use. This is vital as, by 9.00am, you’ll have a hard time finding parking.

“Clifton is the beach in Cape Town most protected against the wind,” says Bing. “When the Southeaster pumps – as it invariably does - you can bet you’ll have perfect weather there.”

Lifestyles of the rich and famous

Clifton beach is situated in an affluent suburb (also named “Clifton”) about 12 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre. It is home to some of the most expensive real estate in Africa with gargantuan mansions nestled on cliffs with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Clifton, a Blue Flag Beach, is also rated as one of the top-10 beaches by the cable and satellite television network Discovery Travel Channel. Forbes rates it as the eighth best topless beach in the world.

Clifton is flanked by the similarly scenic and prosperous suburbs of Camps Bay and Bantry Bay – each with their own picture-perfect beach.
