SA's poor performing municipalities entrenching inequality

The Government Performance Index, developed by Good Governance Africa, looked at South Africa's best and worst performing municipalities. The research measures how local government resources are being allocated, and helps identify problem areas.

The performance of 230 local and metropolitan municipalities was measured across 3 categories, namely administration, economic development and service delivery indicators.

The bottom ranked municipalities are all located in former homelands of Zululand and Pondoland, while the top performing municipalities are in the historically wealthier areas.

702/Cape Talk’s Eusebius McKaiser stand-in for Redi Tlhabi, spoke to Executive Director of the organisation, Dr Alain Tshudin, about his analysis regarding the matter.

Listen to the conversation below:

Our discussion is an honest attempt at what can be done to uplift and upscale lower performing municipalities.
