Mbeki meets with ANC candidates after receiving EFF leadership

Former President Thabo Mbeki has met with ANC election candidates at his home in Johannesburg, following a meeting with EFF leadership on Monday.

ANC's Joburg mayoral candidate Parks Tau held a meeting at Mbeki's Killarney home today after EFF leader Julius Malema paid a visit to Mbeki to persuade him to vote for his party.

The plan was to meet with all of the ANC candidates from the Joburg metro, but only Tau and ward 73 candidate Rossalin Chinsamy arrived at Mbeki's home.

Chinsamy and Tau briefed Mbeki behind closed doors about the work that they have been doing in the city, and the progress of the ANC's campaign, reports EWN's Gia Nicolaides.

Mbeki insists that the absent ANC candidates had other campaign commitments to attend to, explains Nicolaides.

Wearing ANC regalia, Mbeki appeared to tell the press that he is willing to meet with any political party leaders.

Mbeki has since told the public that his vote is his secret.

I will vote tomorrow... But that's a secret ballot.

Meanwhile, Daily Maverick Associate Editor Ranjeni Munusamy says the meeting with Mbeki and the EFF was strategically timed to cause a stir on the eve of elections.

By far, the EFF has come out looking better...

She says the EFF is targeting the voters who are undecided, and the meeting is an attempt to take them off the fence.

Munusamy says Mbeki must have realised the significant impact that the EFF meeting would have on the news agenda ahead of voting.
