Twitter and Facebook users take voting choices online

Voting in 2016 does not come without Twitter, Facebook and the like. And this election has seen numbers of social media users take their voting choices onto their favourite platforms.

Christo van Wyk, Director of Client Experience, Meltwater speaks to CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson about the growing phenomenon.

Meltwater tracked social media trends going into the 2016 Municipal Elections over the past 30 days.

It's been interesting to look at the slow build-up. In the beginning main conversations sparking around party policy, the candidates running for the elections, and a lot of campaign messaging.

He says the public hopped on the bandwagon of those messages.

They highlighted disappointments and scrutinised what is fact and what is fiction.

Van Wyk says social media has been a platform for people to highlight any campaign controversy.

It has been very interesting that South Africans have come out very strongly for their particular party of choice, and rallying around that party's messaging and making sure they can also influence the social community with their respective views.

They have not been shy in...exchanging blows by telling others what they think of their choice of party they votes for.
