Black South Africans do not appreciate the value of voting says Mantashe

Capetalk/702's Eusebius Mckaiser (standing in for Redi Tlhabi) caught up with ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe at the National Results Operations Centre in Pretoria to talk about election results.

Mantashe said the IEC is doing very well regarding counting process, and added that those who have attempted to delegitimise the IEC will have to work harder to do so. He says the IEC responded quickly whenever they experienced problems at polling stations.

He did voice his concerns about black South Africans not taking elections seriously.

Black South Africans have not appreciated fully the value of voting

Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary General

Mantashe says people in the suburbs woke up very early to go and vote where as in the townships queues started building up much later in the day, only after 5pm just before the voting stations closed.

Success for the ANC would mean retaining everything they have and if they lose a municipality, it should be replaced with another, says Mantashe.

If we loose Kouga in the Eastern Cape and we absorb Avian that is equal. We must retain as many municipalities as we were controlling, that is success.

Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary General

According to Mantashe the ANC is doing well in Nelson Mandela Bay where they have won 36 of the 60 wards. The ANC is also confident that they will win Tshwane.

However, he says the local government elections are not about President Jacob Zuma, but about what is happening in the wards and about having reputable ward Councillors.

Mckaiser also had a chat with Phumzile van Damme of the DA and and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of the EFF to get their view points on the election results that are still trickling in. Listen below
