ANC's Zweli Mkhize says parties will need to work together in the future

While ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize says the ruling party is confident that it will remain in power in Nelson Mandela Bay, he acknowledged that there has been a significant shift in voting patterns.

He attributes these changes to democratic evolution of South Africa, as well as internal issues the ANC has been dealing with.

The dynamics of elections will change. At the moment we must also be aware...the numbers of people voting in these municipalities is growing, and there is a huge amount of dilution that would have happened.

Zwel Mkhize, ANC Treasurer-General

Mkhize says the contest between parties has strengthened as well. In addition the ANC has had to deal with internal issues and situations like the protests in Tshwane.

To pull all of those together does create a bit of a dent, and we would expect that would have had some impact.

Zwel Mkhize, ANC Treasurer-General

The democracy is maturing, so you will find that more and more of the elections will have dilution, where you will not be having strong support for one party. And therefore it will slowly move towards a point where there will be a need for parties to be working together

Zwel Mkhize, ANC Treasurer-General

He alluded to many countries where parties working together is the norm as democracies mature.

He says the ANC has learned many lessons over the past five years.
