The IFP wins Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla Municipality.

The IFP has won Jacob Zuma’s home turf of Nkandla.

Inkatha Freedom Party has proved President Jacob Zuma wrong again winning Nkandla Municipality with 54% of votes.

The African National Congress received 44.25% of the vote.

The Municipality has always been ruled by the IFP, until in 2011 when it lost to a coalition of the ANC and NFP.

Xolani Gwala speaks to Paul Berkowitz, director of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa.

From preliminary results it looked like a lot of NFP votes gone back to the IFP regardless of what the NFP leaders had said to their supporters.

Paul Berkowitz, director of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa.

Berkowitz says the IFP are faring well in areas of KZN.

Some municipalities are still waiting on the results but if you look at the map it looks very well for the IFP in municipalities like Ulundi and Umsinga. And other municipalities like Nquthu where the party doesn’t have the majority but does have a share of votes. And it’s going to be interesting because they might look at the coalitions

Paul Berkowitz, director of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa.
