The 2016 Olympic Games will officially start in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the opening ceremony at the Maracana Stadium.
The opening ceremony will get underway at 8pm in Rio, and air on television at 1am on Saturday in South African time.
EWN Sports editor Jean Smyth explains that the parade of nations will kick off the ceremony, with Greece leading out with its team first.
Smyth says that track and field sprinter Wayde van Niekerk will lead the South African Olympic team in flying the flag during the parade.
At least 5 000 volunteers, in addition to strong police and military presence have been deployed to ensure that the event goes on without a hitch.
