Parties must list their demands before starting coalition talks - analyst

The fate of local governance in Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni hangs in the balance as coalition partners are negotiated in the aftermath of the municipal elections.

The EFF has secured its position as the kingmaker where both the DA and the ANC received less than 50% in the metros and are seeking help from smaller parties to govern the big councils, explains political analyst Professor Richard Calland.

They have it within their power to decide who should govern.

Richard Calland, political analyst

According to Calland, "political fit" is more important than ideology when deciding on coalition governments.

He says that parties must be clear on their non-negotiable conditions before entering into coalition partnerships.

EFF leader Julius Malema has told the DA that he would only collaborate with them if they make land reform a priority on the political agenda, while he told the ANC that it has to remove its president Jacob Zuma before any further talks.
