Online safety: Is it spying or sheer concern?

While parents would like to protect their children against the ills of internet usage, they need to be conscious that they are not becoming spies.

Parenting expert Nikki Bush says the important thing is communication and creating a good parent to child relationship.

We need to be around and we need to be watching, having eyes and ears at the back of our heads because they can access things online either consciously or they can fall into inappropriate content.

Bush says parents need to communicate to their children why they cannot access certain content and the consequences if they do.

If your children have devices, you need to have an agreement about what those devices can be used for, says Bush. She says there's a cellphone contract for teens that can be downloaded.

Children need to understand that everything that they see or hear online actually goes in, their brains are like sponge, they have no protection.
