ANC's losses in key metros high on 4-day NEC agenda

The African National Congress' National Executive Council (NEC) will discuss the outcome of the 2016 local government election at their four day meeting on Thursday.

The ANC lost an outright majority in key metropolitican municipalities (Nelson Mandela Bay, City of Tshwane, City of Joburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality) ushering a new era in South Africa's political landscape.

While a detailed agenda remains unknown, some suspect a war of words might erupt between NEC members over whether President Jacob Zuma's tarnished image affected the majority party's poor performance in the elections.

Meanwhile, Reverend Frank Chikane will hold a tell-all press conference later on Thursday. He is expected to reveal a document he presented to the ANC about the state of affairs within the party.

702's Nikiwe Bikitsha (standing in for John Robbie) spoke to EWN reporter, Stephen Grootes, to give context to the developing issue.

Listen to the interview below:

It's important to say that the ANC has never been in this position before... Is it true to say that the ANC has never suffered an electoral setback as this big a shock?

Stephen Grootes, EWN reporter

Whoever brings up the president in the room is likely to get their head chopped off... I don't see how that meeting ends.
