Relative may be in jail but we will always have Zephany taunts abductor's family

The 52 year old Lavender Hill woman was found guilty in march this year of kidnapping 3 day old Zephany in 1997, as well as fraud and contravening the Children's Act, and today was sentenced to an effective ten years behind bars, as the sentences will run concurrently.

EWN Giovanna Gerbi was in court and reports that Judge John Hlophe said he finds the crime so serious, he could not do otherwise, and the entire sentencing procedure lasted for less than 15 minutes.

Throughout her trial she remained completely emotionless, with no expression. She would look up at her family in the dock, and when taken down to holding cells would look up at them and smile, but no remorse or tears, and that was another point Judge Hlophe hammered on.

Hlophe said if the woman had pleaded guilty to having stolen the child in 1997, or showed some form of remorse, it may have made a difference.

There was quite an altercation outside of court, between the lavender Hill family and the Nurse family, where they were taunting them and saying, you may have sent our relative to prison, but we will always have Zephany, because she has still chosen to live with the father who raised her.
