Victory for junior doctors as working hours reduced to 24 hours

Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo, announced yesterday the reduction in continuous working hours for medical interns from 30- to 24-hour shifts.

The decision follows a growing concern from overworked junior doctors demanding new regulations for their working hours.

Previously, a junior doctor from at Paarl Hospital, Ilne Markwat, was killed in an accident on her way home from work, after allegedly falling asleep behind the wheel and colliding with another vehicle on the N1.

CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson spoke to Dr. Zahid Badroodien, Chairperson of Junior Doctors Association of South Africa about the reviewed working hours.

We definitely support and laud the ministers move towards a reduction in continuous working hour in which junior doctors are expected to work in the Western Cape. This is a victory for junior doctors in this province...

Dr. Zahid Badroodien, Chairperson of Junior Doctors Association of South Africa

Dr Badroodien urged the national department of health to address the matter with urgency, and also follow suit in reducing the working hours of junior doctors in other provinces.

He says Judasa will be engaging other organisations in helping speed up the process in other provinces.
